Tuesday, March 2nd: Sierra Vista, AZ Breakfast at Cafe Ole' with Dick and Sandy Parsons, Sandy's daughter Candy and her two sons Bill (Whitehouse Landing) and Tim, set the stage for a wonderful morning, complete with a two mile prayer walk for Circuit Rider, who desperately needs some exercise at this juncture. The guys are continuing their week long visit in Sierra Vista, Arizona at the home of Dick and Sandy Parsons. This evening the entire gang enjoyed a New England Boiled Dinner (Corn Beef and Cabbage). Other highlights today included phone conversations with Jennie Payne of Mt. Vernon, Kentucky, David Martin of Harbor Springs, Michigan and Roy Lefavour of East Brunswick, New Jersey. The remainder of the afternoon was enjoyed on the patio with dear, dear friends. One more highlight of note. Just past sunset tonight, the entire gang congregated on the patio to view a spectacular five minute fly by of the International Space Station.
Wednesday, March 3rd: Sierra Vista, AZ What a spectacular day it was! Temperatures hovering at 70 degrees made for a most enjoyable 6.3 mile hike along the San Pedro River for Sherlock and Circuit Rider. While they were enjoying the trail, Sandy Parsons, along with her two sons Bill (Whitehouse Landing) and Tim, took Sandy's daughter Candy back to the Tucson Airport for her flight home to Minocqua, Wisconsin. She made it safely back there this evening. Tonight, the whole gang enjoyed dinner together at Chili's, then returned to Dick and Sandy's home for some pictures and more storytelling.
Thursday, March 4th: Sierra Vista, AZ In the predawn hours this morning Sherlock and Circuit Rider took Bill Ware (Whitehouse Landing) and his brother Tim back to the Tucson Airport. What a wonderful few days it had been celebrating their Mom's 75th Birthday! After the guys said goodbye to the guys, they headed to Whataburger for an early morning treat. 7:00 a.m. may seem a bit early for a burger most mornings, but these are no ordinary burgers! Following that bit of indulgence the duo took the scenic route back to Sierra Vista, Arizona and the home of Dick and Sandy Parsons. The rest of the day was spent working on taxes and enjoying some patio time with close friends. This evening the two accompanied the Parsons to dinner. Circuit Rider walked home afterwards. After what he ate, he needed to!
Friday, March 5th: Sierra Vista, AZ Circuit Rider worked on taxes for the second day in a row at the home of Dick and Sandy Parsons. Sherlock meanwhile caught up with phone calls and emails. Conversations with Gorilla Jim (AT '02) in Owasso, Oklahoma, David Martin in Harbor Springs, Michigan, Andy Hoover in Lakeland, Florida, Audrey Badgero in Onaway, Michigan, Charlene Forgione in Whiting, New Jersey, and Ulysses' parents Jim and Linda McGhee in Norridge, Illinois added some much needed variety to an otherwise monotonous task. This evening the guys enjoyed Sandy's delicious cooking once again. The four then settled down for an evening of relaxing conversation and, of course, ice cream.

Friday, March 19th: Rock Spring, GA The guys arrived at the home of "Mom" Alexander early this afternoon following an all night drive from Delaware. They had lunch with her at Wanda's Restaurant in town, then enjoyed an afternoon bike ride with her grandchildren Micah (14) and Tess (10). This evening, following Tess' soccer practice, the entire gang did their annual "donut run" to Krispy Kreme in Chattanooga. Mom Alexander's daughter Karen and her little girl Heather (8) joined them for the sweet treat. Also joining in on the fun were Danny and Martha Alexander, Tess and Micah's parents who also live in Rock Spring.
Saturday, March 20th: Rock Spring, GA A rare opportunity to sleep in began this day. Morning coffee with "Mom" Alexander was followed by a trip to Chattanooga to watch Tess play in her first ever soccer game. Though they lost 6-5, everyone came away smiling. The afternoon was spent shopping for trail supplies, answering phone calls, then meeting up with Laura Peterson, who recently moved from Upper Michigan to Signal Mountain, Tennessee. The entire gang then feasted on yet another annual tradition, pork barbeque at Choo Choo's.
Sunday, March 21st: Rock Spring, GA
Monday, March 22nd: Amicalola Falls, GA - Black Gap Shelter (7.3 miles) We should've know what to expect the moment I saw flurries spitting from the sky early this morning as we were loading the car in Mom Alexander's driveway. Had it not been for the promise we made to meet Hopeful (AT '03) and Mr. Toad (AT '10) at the Amicalola Falls Archway by 8:30 a.m. I believe I would have had little problem convincing Sherlock to wait one more day. Flurries in the valley almost certainly assure there will be accumulating snow at the higher elevations. Today turned out to be no exception.
As I lay here in the tent at the close of this first day on the Trail, thinking about Mr. Toad's inflamed ankle (he turned it on his way down to the spring less than a mile back) and what that might mean for the remainder of his hike, a bitter night ahead without even the warmth of a cup of coffee or hot meal (we really didn't plan our fuel very well), the reality of Sherlock forgetting one quarter of his food supply at Mom Alexander's, and the wonder at how little we have learned from nine seasons on the Trail (even the Park Ranger wondered "what possessed us" to start our hike in these conditions!), I can't help but marvel at how my God has taken care of us this day. We are here, (injured ankles and all), we are warm, we are dry, and we are fed. And we even had the privilege of being involved in ministry along the way, praying with three hikers and promising the same to a third. Indeed, His riches have once again been made available to us. -CR
And my God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus. Now to our God and Father be the glory forever and ever. Amen. (Philippians 4:19,20)
Tuesday, March 23rd: Black Gap Shelter - Amicalola Falls, GA (7.3 miles)
Wednesday, March 24th: Rock Spring, GA I was warming myself with a second cup of coffee yesterday morning when Mr. Toad approached the tent and announced, "Guys, I'm not going to be able to go on. My ankle is just not going to allow me to keep hiking." Within a few minutes the decision was made. Mr. Toad and Hopeful would continue north 2.7 miles to the Springer mountain parking area while Shelock and I returned to where our car was parked, 7.3 miles to the south. We would then drive to the top of Springer to retrieve them. 14.6 miles into our trek, the hike was done.
That doesn't mean ministry is done however. Not in the least. As Mr. Toad left early this morning for his home near Allentown, Pennsylvania, Hopeful prepared to leave his to join us for several days of ministry on the road.
There won't be time between now and Sunday afternoon to see everyone we would like to visit. We find ourselves however, excitedly anticipating those stops we will get to make, enjoying face to face fellowship with those we wouldn't have seen had we been on the Trail this week.
In a discussion with Mr. Toad and Hopeful last evening. reflecting on any potential disappointment or frustration we may have had at having our plans abruptly altered, I said. "You know, here is a perfect example of what has driven us from the very beginning when God placed us on this Trail. Our ministry involves the Appalachian Trail. It does not revolve around it!"
This morning, the dawn broke bright and clear. Spring has returned to the South. What a perfect day for hiking. What a perfect day as well for driving to someone's home, someone we hold so close to our hearts. We're still on the Trail, the only one we long to blaze. -CR
